HC-History with Jason of Crowned Kings

1Do you remember the first hardcore / punk show you went to? Is the club still open today?

The first show I ever went to was at EV’s. A youth Center in the suburban town i grew up in. I checked out a punk band called Quentin and a metal band called Synthetic Breed. Both bands just blew me away. I was 13 and it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen at the time. And yeah it’s still open, but they don’t run shows anymore, and it really bums me out because it was the perfect venue for kids that just didn’t have the means to get into the city.

2What is your all-time favorite club or location?

My all time favourite is the Bendigo Hotel, in Melbourne. I still go there today, but I’ve had heaps of great memories there. Every band I’ve played in has performed there and it’s always been ground zero for what we do and love in Melbourne.

3Do you remember the first hardcore / punk record you got?

The first hardcore record I got was ‚Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire‘. That’s where my love for that band started. Being a huge metal head aswell, Hatebreed has always had the best contrast for me. The only other album that’s done that for me is ‚Ashes Of The Wake‘ by Lamb Of God. Not categorised as a hardcore band, but fuck me…can write a breakdown!

4In your opinion what is the perfect hardcore show?

Every hardcore show is perfect. Because no matter who’s playing, or where it’s held, the vibes are always there.

5What is your all-time favorite show you’ve played?

The best show I’ve ever played was probably when we played Mighty Sounds, in Czech Republic in 2017. The crowd reaction blew me away, and it was the perfect first show of a tour. We also got to see H20 that night, and they always rip it up.

6Is there a show you missed in the past that still makes you angry that you could not be there?

We were originally going to do a stop over in Germany on a day off of tour to go and see Crowbar. But I don’t think we had the time to get there. And that still pisses me off because that just would have been nuts. Haha!

7What band would you like to see again?

I’d love to see Knuckledust again. Awesome dudes and I’ve always loved their tracks. They put on a banger of a show aswell.

8Is there a person who has influenced you especially in hardcore / punk?

To be honest, most of my influence has come from metal artists. Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God were the ones that got me into heavy music from day dot.

9What are you top 3 hardcore-punk drummers / front men (women)?

Top 3 would have to include Scott from Terror, Armand from Sick Of It All, and Candice from Walls Of Jericho, and Phil and Randy of course. Haha.

10What is in your opinion the most underrated hardcore-punk band?

Most underrated would probably have to be Throwdown. For such a fucking awesome band, there’s been so many times I’ve tried to show people Haymaker and Venom And Tears and they’ve never heard of it. Like seriously, get around it.

11Are there some newer bands you could mention?

A few Melbourne artists would probably have to be Overpower, Rust Proof, Gravemind and Outright. All of whtich are wicked bands, awesome guys (and girls) and I really hope they get more recognition!

Crowned Kings will release their new full-length Sea of Misery on 23rd March 2018 via Demons Run Amok Entertainment.
